Working area of the Belgica The Belgica's main working area is the North Sea from Brest (France) to Aberdeen (UK), but if necessary, in the context of international co-operation, the Belgica even travels as far as Norwegian waters or to the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, mooring for instance in Vigo (Spain) or Cork (Ireland). For an average campaign, scientists go on board on Monday morning and leave the ship on Friday afternoon. However, there are also campaigns during which the Belgica spends longer periods away from its home port of Zeebrugge, lasting up to eight weeks. During all these assignments, different research teams go on board together and relieve one another, so that the work carries on every minute of the day and night.
